iPhone Personal Hotspot Limits Explained
An iPhone's Personal Hotspot does not have a limit of its own set by Apple. Any hotspot limit comes from your mobile plan: many carriers count data shared with other devices separately from data used on the phone, and some plans do not include hotspot at all. This guide covers how to see what your plan allows, how to check your usage on iOS, and your official options.
Where the limit comes from
Your carrier decides how much hotspot data your plan includes and what happens once it is used, usually reduced hotspot speed until the next billing period. If Personal Hotspot is missing from Settings or asks you to contact your carrier, the plan or line usually has no hotspot entitlement. Check your plan details in your carrier's app, or see our carrier guides for Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and others.
How to check your hotspot usage on iPhone
- Open Settings, then Cellular (Mobile Data in some regions).
- Tap System Services and look for Personal Hotspot, which shows data shared with other devices.
- This counter runs from the last time statistics were reset, not per billing cycle. Tap Reset Statistics at the bottom of the Cellular screen on your billing date if you want it to line up with your plan.
Your carrier's app remains the authoritative figure for what counts against your plan.
Official options
- Buy a hotspot add-on or move to a plan with more hotspot data if your carrier offers one.
- Wait for the reset on your billing date.
- Use Wi-Fi for large downloads and pause automatic updates or backups on the laptop while tethering.
Using an iPhone as a client
An iPhone or iPad can also connect to an Android phone that shares its mobile data through a SOCKS5 proxy, using a SOCKS5-capable app such as Shadowrocket or Potatso Lite. See the iOS setup steps. Data used this way counts toward the Android phone's mobile plan.
If you want to share your phone's mobile data with a laptop or another phone, Tether Link Utility is an Android app that does this through a local SOCKS5 proxy. Data used by connected devices still counts toward your mobile plan, so check your carrier's tethering terms.
