How to Check If Your Hotspot Is Really Unlimited
"Unlimited" on a phone plan usually describes the data you use on the phone itself. Hotspot data, the data your laptop or tablet uses through your phone, is very often counted separately, with its own smaller allowance. The checks below take a few minutes and tell you which kind of plan you have.
1. Look for a separate hotspot number in your plan
Open your plan's details on the carrier's site or app and look for a hotspot-specific line. Wording to watch for includes "Mobile Hotspot data", "high-speed hotspot data", "premium hotspot", "paylaşım kotası" in Turkey, or a daily quota and FUP (Fair Usage Policy) in India. If the plan lists a GB figure for hotspot, your hotspot is not unlimited at full speed, even if the plan's name says "Unlimited".
2. Check your carrier's app
Where each carrier we cover shows your usage, and what reaching the limit typically looks like. All checked September 2026 against the carrier's own support pages unless noted. Menus and plans change, so treat these as starting points and confirm in your carrier's app.
| Carrier | Where to look | What happens at the limit |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon | My Verizon (app or website) shows your plan's Mobile Hotspot allowance. | Hotspot slows for the rest of the cycle, for example to 600 Kbps on 5G / 4G LTE after 30 GB on Unlimited Plus. Details |
| AT&T | AT&T's wireless usage center: sign in, pick the number, open the Data tab. | AT&T says hotspot slows to a maximum of 128 Kbps once the plan's hotspot data is used, unless you buy more. Details |
| T-Mobile | T-Life app: pick your line and open its data usage, where smartphone Mobile HotSpot usage is shown. Updates roughly every two hours. | Unlimited at 600 Kbps after the high-speed hotspot allowance (60 GB on Experience More, 250 GB on Experience Beyond). Details |
| US Cellular | The UScellular My Account app shows usage per line. If you moved to a T-Mobile plan, use T-Life instead. | Hotspot slows after the plan's bundled hotspot allotment. Details |
| Jio | MyJio app: Mobile, then Check Usage. Your high-speed balance also shows on the home screen. | Hotspot shares the daily high-speed quota, so speed drops once the day's data is used and recovers after the daily reset. Details |
| Airtel | Airtel Thanks app, which shows data balance and usage. | On Unlimited 5G, hotspot use falls back to your regular daily data quota, so it can run out while the phone still shows unlimited 5G. Details |
| Vodafone (Turkey) | Vodafone Yanımda app, "Kalan Kullanımların" page, where the hotspot allowance and any Paylaşım package are listed separately. | Tethered speed drops once the hotspot allowance is used, while normal data can still show plenty left. Details |
| Turkcell | Turkcell app or "Hat Özetim" on turkcell.com.tr, or send KALAN by free SMS to 2222. | Tethered speed drops once the tethering quota is used. Details |
| Türk Telekom | Türk Telekom app, or send KALAN by SMS to 5555. | Tethered speed drops once the paylaşım kotası is used. Details |
FirstNet is a special case: its Responder plans don't carve hotspot into the same kind of separate bucket. See our FirstNet page for the terms that do apply.
3. Check your phone's own hotspot counter
Your phone keeps its own count, which is handy for seeing how close you are before the carrier's app updates.
- Android (Samsung wording): Settings, Connections, Data usage, Mobile data usage, then Mobile hotspot and tethering. Other Android phones have a similar entry, but menu names vary by manufacturer.
- iPhone: Settings, Cellular, System Services, then Personal Hotspot. This counter runs since the last time statistics were reset, not per billing cycle, so it won't match your carrier's number exactly.
Signs you've reached a hotspot limit
- The phone is fast but the laptop is slow, at the same place and the same moment. Run a speed test on both. A big gap points to a hotspot-specific limit rather than weak signal.
- Speed sits flat at a low, round number. A hard limit looks like a steady ceiling, for example around 0.6 Mbps (600 Kbps) on Verizon or T-Mobile, or 0.128 Mbps on AT&T. Congestion looks different: speeds jump around and recover at quieter hours.
- It started mid-cycle and returns to normal on your billing date, or at the daily reset on Indian plans with daily quotas.
- Hotspot won't turn on, or devices connect with no internet. That usually means the plan or line has no hotspot entitlement at all, not a speed limit.
If your hotspot isn't really unlimited
- Buy a hotspot add-on or move to a higher plan if your carrier sells one. This is the fully supported route.
- Wait for the reset on your billing date, or the next day on daily-quota plans.
- Move large downloads to Wi-Fi and pause laptop backups and updates while tethering.

If you want to share your phone's mobile data with a laptop or another phone, Tether Link Utility is an Android app that does this through a local SOCKS5 proxy. Data used by connected devices still counts toward your mobile plan, so check your carrier's tethering terms.
