How Much Hotspot Data Do I Need? Usage by Activity

Quick answerChecked Oct 2026
Light useEmail, chat and browsing: roughly 5 to 15 GB a month
Regular workDaily video calls and cloud apps: roughly 30 to 60 GB a month
Heavy useHD streaming, large downloads, updates: 100 GB or more a month
Biggest surpriseSystem updates, cloud sync and video autoplay on the connected device

Short answer: for email, chat and browsing, roughly 5 to 15 GB of hotspot data a month is often enough. If you work from a laptop with daily video calls, plan for roughly 30 to 60 GB. Regular HD streaming or big downloads can use 100 GB or more. What matters is what the connected device does: the hotspot itself uses almost nothing, the laptop, tablet or other phone on it does.

Hotspot data use by activity

Activity on the connected deviceRough data use
Email and messaging (text)A few MB per hour
Web browsingAround 0.05 to 0.15 GB per hour
Music streamingAround 0.05 to 0.15 GB per hour
Video calls (Zoom, Teams, Meet)Around 0.5 to 1.5 GB per hour, more in HD or large groups
Video streaming, standard definitionAround 1 GB per hour
Video streaming, HDUp to about 3 GB per hour
Video streaming, 4KAround 7 GB per hour or more
Operating system or game updatesFrom a few hundred MB to several GB each

(Rough estimates. Streaming services and video call apps publish their own figures, and actual use depends on quality settings, the app and the device.)

Where hidden hotspot data goes

A laptop connected to your phone usually behaves as if it were on home Wi-Fi. That means:

How to make your hotspot data last

  1. Mark the connection as metered. On Windows, open the Wi-Fi network's properties and turn on Metered connection, so Windows pauses most updates. On a Mac, recent macOS versions offer Low Data Mode in the Wi-Fi network's details.
  2. Pause cloud sync while connected to your phone.
  3. Lower video quality in streaming and video call apps.
  4. Save big downloads for Wi-Fi at home, work or a café.
  5. Watch the counter. Android shows hotspot usage in the hotspot or data usage screen; iPhone under Settings, Cellular, Personal Hotspot.

Sharing your phone's data with another device

Whether you use the built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, a USB cable, Bluetooth or an app, the connected device's data comes from your mobile plan. Our comparison of the methods: 5 ways to share your phone's internet with another device. Tether Link Utility is an Android app that shares your phone's mobile data over Wi-Fi through a local SOCKS5 proxy, set up with a QR code. It counts toward your plan like any other method, so check your plan's tethering terms first.

Frequently asked questions

How much hotspot data do I need per month?

For email, chat and browsing a few hours a week, 5 to 15 GB is often enough. For working from a laptop with daily video calls, plan for roughly 30 to 60 GB. Regular HD streaming or large downloads can use 100 GB or more. These are rough estimates; your own usage history is the best guide.

How much data does a hotspot use per hour?

It depends on what the connected device does, not on the hotspot itself. Browsing may use around 0.1 GB an hour, a video call around 0.5 to 1.5 GB, and HD video streaming up to about 3 GB an hour.

Is 10 GB of hotspot data enough?

For email, messaging and light browsing, usually yes. It is not much for video: about three hours of HD streaming or around ten hours of video calls can use it up.

Why did my hotspot data run out so fast?

Laptops treat a hotspot like home Wi-Fi unless told otherwise, so system updates, cloud backups and app downloads run in the background. Mark the connection as metered and pause sync to cut this.
