How to checkYour carrier app → plan details → look for a separate hotspot figure

Short answer: on most unlimited plans, hotspot is included at no extra charge, but it is not unlimited at full speed. "Unlimited" describes the data you use on the phone itself. Hotspot, the data your laptop, tablet or another phone uses through your phone, usually has its own smaller high-speed allowance. After that, hotspot keeps working at a much lower speed until your billing cycle resets. Some entry-level unlimited plans include no high-speed hotspot at all.

Free to use, but with its own allowance

Carriers rarely charge you for switching hotspot on. What they limit is how much hotspot data runs at full speed. Once that allowance is used, hotspot is slowed to a speed that is fine for messaging and email but slow for video calls and downloads. The phone itself keeps its normal speed.

So the useful questions are: does my plan include hotspot, how much high-speed hotspot data do I get, and what speed applies after it?

What the big US carriers include

How to see how much hotspot you have

  1. Open your carrier's app My Verizon, T-Life or myAT&T, then your line's plan or usage details.
  2. Look for a separate hotspot figure Wording like "high-speed hotspot data" or "Mobile Hotspot" with a GB number is your allowance.
  3. Note your billing date The allowance refreshes at the start of each billing cycle, not on the first of the month.
  4. Check your phone's counter Android shows hotspot usage in the hotspot or data usage screen; iPhone shows it under Settings, Cellular, Personal Hotspot.

Sharing your phone's data with another device

Built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, USB, Bluetooth and proxy apps are all ways to share your phone's mobile data with another device. They differ in setup, speed and battery use; we compare them in 5 ways to share your phone's internet with another device. Tether Link Utility is an Android app that shares your phone's mobile data over Wi-Fi through a local SOCKS5 proxy. Whichever method you use, the data comes from your mobile line and counts toward your plan, so check your plan's tethering terms first.

Frequently asked questions

If I have unlimited data, is hotspot free?

Usually it is included at no extra charge, but it is not unlimited at full speed. Most unlimited plans give hotspot its own high-speed allowance, and after that hotspot keeps working at a much lower speed until the billing cycle resets. Some entry-level plans include no high-speed hotspot at all.

Does hotspot cost extra?

On plans that include hotspot, turning it on does not cost extra. You pay more only if you buy a hotspot add-on or move to a plan with a larger allowance. On plans without hotspot, the feature may not work until you change plans.

How much hotspot do I have?

Check your plan details in your carrier's app. In our September 2026 checks: Verizon 30 GB (Unlimited Plus), 200 GB (Unlimited Ultimate), 10 GB (Simplicity), none on Unlimited Welcome; T-Mobile 250 GB (Experience Beyond), 60 GB (Experience More), none listed on Essentials; AT&T varies by plan.

Does data I share with another device count toward my plan?

Yes. Built-in hotspot, USB, Bluetooth or an app that shares your connection over Wi-Fi all use your mobile line's data, so it counts toward your plan and its hotspot terms.
